Exhaust System Coatings

TECH LINE exhaust system coatings are designed to maintain adhesion at temperatures above the normal operating range of an exhaust system. Unless otherwise indicated, temperatures given refer to the base metal temperature that a coating can normally be expected to handle. Depending on the resin system, Tech Line’s coatings designed for exhaust systems can handle base metal temperatures in excess of 2000°F. The color change can be expected at lower temperatures with many of the coatings. A color change does not necessarily reflect a failure of the coating, as color stability is secondary to the protective function. Several colors have maintained color stability to base metal temperatures in excess of 1600°F. The application of a base coat can raise the color stability of all exhaust system coatings.

Many of these coatings require full cure at 750°F for one hour.

CERMAKROME™
The Highest Performing, Most Widely Used “Chrome” Exhaust Coating Available

CermaKrome (MCX) is a metallic ceramic coating capable of providing extremely high levels of corrosion and chemical protection in a very thin film while producing a very high luster, near chrome appearance. When applied to exhaust systems, MCX will withstand substrate temperatures of over 1300°F and environmental temperatures of up to 1600°F (higher temperatures with a base coat or double coating). In addition, the direct flame will not cause delamination as long as substrate temperatures do not exceed this temperature. Due to its unique ceramic nature, the coating also functions as a very effective thermal barrier, with reduced thermal radiation characteristics. Requires a 500°F cure, with maximum hardness achieved with a 650°F cure. After curing, the coating requires “burnishing” to be sealed. This burnishing process can produce a very high luster, near chrome, appearance. MCX cures out to a very hard surface with excellent adhesion. The water-based solvent system provides for an environmentally friendly material with a bake/cure cycle that is not as hazardous as other thermally cured resin systems.

  • Protective to over 1300°F Base Metal Temperature
    • Maintains adhesion at environmental temperatures up to 2000°F.
  • Designed for single coat coverage (.001″ to .0015″)

MCS INSULATING COATING

MCS is a ceramic reinforced coating capable of providing extremely high levels of insulation and chemical protection in very thin films. Designed to be used as a base coat for CermaKrome (MCX) and other Tech Line coatings. It is to be used either as a base coat on the outside diameter or as a standalone coating on the inside diameter. MCS as a base coat allows CermaKrome to be used in applications where normal metallic ceramic coatings will not maintain adhesion. In independent testing, CermaKrome applied over MCS, maintained adhesion with exhaust temperatures over 1800°F with no significant dulling of the highly polished surface. When applied to exhaust systems, MCS is capable of withstanding substrate temperatures of over 1800°F (EGT’s of over 2000°F), in addition, the direct flame will not cause delamination as long as substrate temperatures do not exceed this temperature. Due to its unique ceramic nature, the coating functions as a very effective thermal barrier, with reduced thermal radiation characteristics. MCS does not have good corrosion resistance and should not be used as a standalone outside diameter coating.

TLHB POLYPHEN™ HOT STOP THERMAL BARRIER (HIGH HEAT I.D. COATING)

TLHB is a thermally cured thermal barrier. TLHB makes use of a unique binding system, to retain high-temperature stability while reducing thermal transfer. The cured material is capable of providing increased thermal resistance while also providing a very slick surface. Film thickness as applied ranges from .0005″ to .003″ and is not sensitive to the manner in which it is applied. If a run or other excessive film build occurs it will simply bubble and crack. The damaged surface may be lightly sanded and then put in service, as normally the coating is not damaged to the base metal level. TLHB achieves full cure at 300°F, after 1 hour at temperature. When cured, TLHB is not affected by most chemicals. TLHB can aid in the more even distribution of heat as well as allow for more efficient operation of the protected part. Part life increase is also a benefit as well as increased corrosion resistance. TLHB may be applied in multiple coats to achieve maximum thickness. Apply a single coat at a time, with a ‘flash’ at 200°F for ten minutes between coats. Allow to cool to ambient before applying the next layer of material.

  • Designed for the inside diameter of chrome pipes to reduce bluing.
  • Excellent thermal barrier for exhaust systems, exhaust ports, and brake system components.
