Welcome to TechLines... November 2005PRI ShowWe just returned from the show. As usual the show was great, the interest in coatings has never been higher. In the past the most common attitude encountered was suspicion. In the last few years that has changed. This year the most common comment by visitors to the booth was that they knew they had to use coatings. On display this year in our booth was a completely coated Mustang rear end. The response to learning how effective coatings could be in reducing friction was enhanced by the display. We had the rear cover off. The gears on this posi rear end were coated with CermaLube and the new seals installed were coated with WSX. The result? By gently turning the pinion flange with your fingers the whole rear end assembly including the gears, axles and rotors (disk brake equipped) would freely turn. The clearances were extremely tight as could be seen by simply trying to turn the pinion while holding the ring gear. This rear end was not set up loose to facilitate turning it. You could grab the rotor on one end, which had no caliper attached, and after giving it a good spin, the unit would make an additional quarter turn after being released. This was with NO lube other than the coatings. This display impressed everyone who saw it and enhanced the appreciation of how effective coatings can be. In addition we had the rotors and calipers coated. The interest in coated brakes for performance was increased by this visual display. The axle tubes and center section were coated with Cermakrome and this really drew attention. We also displayed a coated wheel and explained the benefits as to heat in relation to tire temperature in competition. Again seeing the coated part had a major impact on the visitor’s appreciation for what coatings can do. These displays were worth the proverbial 1000 words. Shops should consider displaying similar parts, as the visitors to the booth went away with a desire to take advantage of the coatings on all of these parts. Supercharger CoatingsJCM Machine & CoatingsBrian KochJCM has been working with a gentleman who rebuilds blowers. He mainly does the Ford Super Coupe Thunderbirds and GM's V-6. JCM has been coating the rotors and the inside of the housing with TLMB & TLML. The test vehicle was a 93 T-Bird 3.8 SC. It made 18 Rear Wheel H.P. and 10 Rear Wheel TQ more than stock. It also produced 2 lbs more boost than stock. CilGen OrangeWe had initially announced the availability of CilGen Orange. In our final test we discovered a problem at high temperature with the frit that was not evident in earlier testing. We have now identified the problem and corrected it. CilGen Orange will be available starting January 2006. It is recommended that two light thin coats of the Orange be applied over a base coat of CermaWhite (CilGen White) for best results and color. This is also recommended for CilGen Red. A final top coat with CermaSeal will give you a very nice final finish that will handle exhaust temps over 1300f.
